About these Historical Villages and this Component of our Website

These magnificent brick-faced Doukhobor villages were constructed and occupied as early as 1908, when several thousand CCUB Doukhobors emigrated here from Saskatchewan. Although the CCUB community collapsed in 1938, many families (mostly USCC members) continued to lease and occupy these same villages until the 1960's after which time they fell into a state of disrepair and were dismantled. A fair quantity of salvaged Doukhobor brick has been recycled in local construction, being used to surface fireplaces, walls and patios. One or two derelict examples of these villages still exist in British Columbia. Two have been reconstructed as museums, and one recently as the Mir Centre at Selkirk College.

Most village names and location markers as seen on this Google Map have been researched jointly by Mike W. Popoff, Castlegar, BC. and Jonathan Kalmakoff, Regina,Sask, and were previously published in Iskra as well as posted in the Genealogy Website map section. They are posted here, courtesy of the authors. The marker descriptions indicate whether a village consisted of a single or double "Dom" and the resident famillies that lived within. This Village Map section of our website is still, however, "under construction" and its development will be an ongoing process as we continue researching and updating placenames, position markers and names of associated resident families.

As we collect more information, we likewise welcome your comments regarding placename errors or omissions. We are also developing a photo component to accompany this section and would be happy to incorporate your photo contributions. If you have historical photos that might help us better illustrate these villages, contact us by using our contact form or email us directly.     (info@usccdoukhobors.org)
