The Kootenay Region Branch of UNA-Canada was formed in 1986 to promote the goals and objectives of the United Nations in south-central British Columbia. With assistance and support from the National Office and UNA-Canada Branches in Victoria and Vancouver, KRUNA offers educational material, programmes and opportunities to

local schools and post secondary institutions that promote the United Nations system, international peace and security,

disarmament, human rights, anti- racism, the elimination of poverty, environmental awareness and sustainable development. KRUNA also cooperates with other non-governmental organizations addressing these issues.

In addition to issuing public service announcements on UN designated dates, KRUNA, on its own or in cooperation with others, also organizes forums, vigils, and other public events dealing with topical UN-related issues, and undertakes an annual local collection of funds, designated to specific global or local needs from the International Day of Peace to the International Day for Human Rights. KRUNA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors from which an Executive Committee consisting of a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer is elected at annual general meetings, held in January. The Branch meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Brilliant Cultural Centre in Castlegar, B.C., and welcomes new members.
